Malignant Mesothelioma
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of cells lining the body’s internal organs, known as the mesothelium (the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs (mesothelium)).
There are three recognized types of mesothelioma based on what part of the mesothelium is affected.
- Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease, accounting for roughly 70% of cases, and occurs in the lining of the lung known as the pleura. Pleural malignant mesothelioma, which affects the tissue that surrounds the lungs and is the most common form of mesothelioma.
- Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneum. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which occurs in the tissue in your abdomen.
- Pericardial mesothelioma originates in the pericardium, which lines the heart. Pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the tissue surrounding the heart.
